Description
Sturdy Bag extra large pet carrier has been tested to safely carry up to 50 pounds (22,6 kg), but is most suitable for large cats, small and some short medium breed dogs up to 35 pounds (15.8 kg). Many professional animal trainers and exhibitors who travel with cats and dogs extensively prefer Sturdy Bag because it is simply the best in-cabin, light weight, flex-height pet carrier available. While the dimension on this carrier are larger than most airlines size requirements, many of our customers have told us for years that they use it for in-cabin, airline travel. Whether it is used on a plane, in the car, or for carrying by foot, your pet will be comfortable and safe in a Sturdy Bag carrier. Machine washable

This bag served us well! We used the XL and took our dog from Cleveland to JFK, via Delta. The bag has three flexible wires that arch over the front, middle, and back, giving it its shape, and two additional wires for the top, which help hold it open. I opted to take the three arched wires out, as this made it droop an inch or two, looking a little bit shorter. I kept the top wires in though, so that it didn't just look like I threw my dog in a gym bag. Like other reviews suggested, I opted for the black bag as it draws less attention from staff and potentially looks smaller than one of the more exciting colors. The plane was a CRJ-900. My dog is a 14 pound German (Mittel, but the smaller end) Spitz, with a 20 inch body, nose to tail. She stands at about 14.5 inches if her head is lowered, but she's quite a bit taller with her head (and long pointy ears!) raised. I was worried they'd turn us away because she wasn't able to raise her head all the way up, but there was no problem. I think it helped that I got her well-acquainted with the bag ahead of time. (I kept excitedly referring to it as her "condo," and I'd bribe her with treats.) When we got to the Delta counter, she was lying in the bag, incredibly calm. I kept the flaps closed over the screens, except for the one on the back side (the screen of which just covers the top half). I held onto the bag, with the base of it sitting on top of my suitcase, and with the back end facing the counter. This way, the Delta employee could just see her happy little face in there :) I don't think other people even noticed that we had a dog.As far as onboard, the bag didn't quite fit all the way under the seat. It was a bit too deep, but it met Delta's requirements. Still, I was nervous they'd have a problem with the edge sticking out. Luckily, on this particular flight, there was nothing separating the spaces underneath the seats. There were two seats to a row, and since I was sitting next to my husband, we were able to turn the bag kind-of diagonally, so that I could still see her face, without any edges sticking out. I unzipped the front screen just a bit at the top, so that I could reach down to pet her ears and give her treats. The scariest part for her was the landing, when all those loud noises started. The take-off was scary for her too. Still, she was silent the entire time! Again, getting your dog acquainted with the bag ahead of time helps.I know that airlines got rid of the emotional support dog option, and after seeing how people abused that rule, it makes sense. (Flight attendants are not paid enough to endure the panic of an "emotional support squirrel" on the loose, mid-flight.) At the same time, dog owners are familiar with the horror stories of what can happen when you have to put your dog under the plane. I think most dog-toting passengers are very willing to pay to travel with their pets on board, but with the kennel requirements, it almost seems impossible (unless you have a chihuahua or something). This bag makes it possible for at least the people with "smaller" breed dogs that are still larger than a cat. I also think we had some luck on our side on this particular day; for example, the Delta employee at the counter being very kind and not asking any questions at all. I'll try to keep this review up to date, as we use the bag more.Worked well although my dog still hated flying. But it’s the best bag available, definitely the biggest that will fit on the plane. I took our 2 of the rods but kept 2 in for support. I keep a photo on my phone like the reviews said incase I use the bag again, and I can show that I had legroom and got it on a previous flight.First review:I don’t write reviews, but as someone who relied on reviews to fly my hefty corgi for a cross country move, I relied on all these reviews here!!! I have a bigger gal, clocking in at 29lbs. I wasn’t concerned about her fitting under the seat, because corgis are short sausage like dogs, I was concerned if the bag would fit under the seat. I also have a corgi puppy (left side carrier, same size, xl, under window seat). The middle seat is definitely the way to go if you have a big small dog! It was a little tight on the window seat, but the puppy was there so I could squish some around easier. The carrier fit no problem and my big corgi had plenty of room to lay down in (see second photo, you can barely even seen her in the carrier!!).This was a United A320 flight and we didn’t have any issues with anyone. The guy at the ticket counter just seemed confused when I said we had dogs and looked twice but I quickly changed the subject and threw the rabies vaccine in his face and he seemed not to care anymore… LOL.We will be flying again with them, so I will keep this updated if anything changes!UPDATE:We flew United again due to how their policy states pet carriers. We flew out of LAS to DEN round trip. We didn’t have any issues checking in a LAS except a cranky woman who walked over not even taking care of us who said the carrier is too big and my dogs cannot stand up or turn around. Since I’ve flown before, this argument was very easy. The manager came out, she saw the corgi with three inch legs stand up and turn around and showed her pictures of them under THEIR plane (A320 first photos). She let us go no problem. They claimed they put a note on our account saying it’s been approved, no need to hassle us on the way back. We get to DEN to fly back to LAS and this new ticketing agent couldn’t figure out our checked bag Situation so she had to get a manager. Then the manager was questioning “where are the dogs” and we are like they are in the bags. She’s like “what bags? OHNO those bags are too big! They won’t be able to squish down! And we clearly pushed back saying we literally just got here from LAS lol. Her finally response was okay but this is the last time! (Like I will be dealing with you again lady lol). Then the conversation switched back to the checked bag situation (ridiculous, I know). Both planes we flew on were BOEING 737-800 (see second photos). You can even see a corgi butt (omg standing and turning around under the seat? You don’t say.). I learned from this trip just have your photos ready to go knowing that your dog and the carrier fit comfortably under the seat!!!!!FYI I always take the length wise rods out to go under the seat and fold the canopy over. Then I put the rods back in once I take them out from under the seat.Have wanted one of these for a long time but didn’t want to spend out. We currently have 3 kittens in the house and this is fantastic. Superior quality material, fixtures and mesh .. well worth it and lovely safe and long lasting design. Very pleased and worth the wait, delivery wise too.Fantastic product, I've used a wide variety of carriers from plastic to a soft one. Out of all of them, this one is the priciest but totally worth it. I've had to use this to transport my cat for the past 2 weeks. When not in use he sleeps inside since it's so spacious and comfortable. As a reference, my cat is quite long and is about 15lbs. He's able to sit up and rotate with no issues. The build quality is very good. The shoulder strap is connected at 4 points on the carrier for added stability. There are a lot of openings with mesh that allow my cat to see out or the flaps can be easily closed off for privacy. What's also great is the board that slides in at the bottom so the carrier doesn't sag from the weight of the cat. The memory foam cushion is secured with a velcro and is well made. Overall I'm very pleased and would highly recommend. Whatever happened in the past is no more. I just got rejected from an air canada flight for the carrier being too big. Despite my protests and photo proof of past successes, alas we weren't even allowed to check in. It's a shame because the carrier is really nice and fits my under 20lbs dog great.Really liked this bag although I only used it for my 20lbs cavalier maybe a total of 6 times. However, today, around 9 months after I bought it and barely used, the rod in the middle of the bag (holding it up and bending when needed) snapped. I ended up with a heck of a plastic splinter in my finger after reaching down to try and figure out what was stabbing me in the ribs as I carried my dog to the train.
