This playpen is great. It was referred to me by a co worker and has been a life saver! We got two 11 week old puppies that have ripped through 2 of the soft sided play pens. They chew on the sides of this one (we are working on that) and no damage has been done after 2 weeks in. You can remove 2 panels if you want it smaller. We use the extra panels as a gate. We wanted a door but you can easily loosen the knob on the panels and treat it as such. It will slide around when the dogs jump against it, even with a non-slide pad under it so we put little dumbells in front of it. It comes with a wall mounting kit if you want to stop the sliding, but we didn't want to ruin the wall. You can also buy extra panels if you want to make 2 four panel play pens which is what we did. Dogs don't mind being in there and seem to prefer it over their kennel that has a top on it. For size, our puppies are 5.5lbs and 11.5lbs. The bigger one is about 2ft tall and can't jump over yet. He will likely be able to as he gets bigger, but with a little training, I don't think this will be an issue.Keeps my pup inside for play as well as for eating time. It's his secure place.we love this product, we’ve bought 3 and attach them as needed to expand/contract the puppies play area.Convenient and easy to use. Great for smaller dogs. Not sure about larger dogs.I have 10 lb 16 wk old half pugg half boston terrier puppy and have this pen in my office and another in my living room. It is soooo much better than cheapos that have horizontal and vertical gridded walls which were ladders out at 9 wks old. My puppy at 15 wks could escape this one also by hopping up grabbing top and pulling herself over. Option for top that could be added is what I need or one another 12 inches taller. I have added cardboard top to living room but looks awful and makes hard for humans to access - would love top that hinges in middle when needed. still great xpen and I recommend.I have been using this pet yard indoors for an 11 week old puppy. It looks good in the home, is easy to configure, and can be quickly set up in multiple configurations. It is high enough to keep puppy in, but low enough that I can lean over the top and quickly pick up the pup if need be (important for housebreaking).I ordered two additional panels for the Pet Yard to expand its size. It is currently set up like a rectangular run that is 6 feet long and 2 feet wide (using the two additional panels). The walk through gate ties the configuration up nicely. I put my pup's 24 inch crate inside the "run" at one end - and it has worked out beautifully. I open her crate and she is free to play and eat. I could not be more pleased with this purchase. While this pet yard fits the bill for my needs with a puppy, it is not sturdy enough to contain a large adult dog. I also have a 55 lb. Pitbull/Boxer mix and would not think of putting her in it and expecting her to be contained. But for a pup or smallish dog - you cant go wrong. The fact that it converts to a gate with the purchase of some extra hardware ($15) is a bonus too.UPDATE 4//2014I am still using this pet yard daily and it has been nearly six months since I purchased it. My hi-energy now 8-month old pup is 40 pounds and 15 inches high at the shoulder - she's into everything. I use this yard to keep her out of trouble when I am in another room and away from the senior dog in the house. She has just recently started trying to jump out - and luckily has not yet been successful. While I'd buy this product again, next time I would be more cognizant and careful with the plastic knobs/hinges that keep the panels in their configuration as they tend to strip out. As my puppy got older - she started leaning against the panels and then pushing against them which would eventually loosen the hinges which allowed the panels to move out of their original configuration. So, my rectangular shaped run (6 feet long X 2 feet with two extra panels purchased separately) would begin to look like a hexagon on one side. I'd simple push the panels back into alignment and tighten the knobs down really tight until she eventually worked the panels out again. Over months of her pushing on the panels and me pushing them back and re-tightening the knobs down as tight as I could - we have a few stripped hinges that no longer secure some of the panels in their place. Since I use this yard in a rectangular setup - I recently attached a 6 foot long 1X2 along the bottom of each side with some tie wraps which stops the pup from being able to push any of the panels out of configuration. This fixed the problem for my setup once and for all. This solution won't work if you use the yard in an octagonal configuration as shown in the picture - so the trick is to preserve the integrity of the hinge assemblies from the get go.The knobs have a plastic top, but a metal, bolt type thread. This metal thread (bolt) screws into the lower part of a round toothed hinge - which is entirely plastic. This plastic threaded hinge receptacle is where the failure occurs as the threads get weak over time. I have therefore removed one star from my original rating. If Carlson would simply make the threaded portion of the lower hinge out of metal too, then the threads would maintain their integrity and not strip over time - making this a perfect product and 5 stars! But even with this flaw, I feel as though I surely got my money's worth from this pet yard, and well - so did my pup as she did not have to be cramped up in a traditional kennel cage when I was home, but unable to keep my eyes on her.The latch doesn’t actually lock closed. The animals haven’t figured it out but my three year old did. So the animals get to roam “semi-freely…” not as effective as the older model we have.Ordered multiple for new small breed puppy. One for home, one for grandma's, and one as a wide opening gate. Works perfectly to contain him as needed.I have a plastic MYPET playpen but wanted something better. I wanted a nicer indoor look, an easy to use gate, convertible to many different sizes and shapes for the future,I love the fact that the door only opens inward so he does not learn that he can push his way through a door until we get him properly trained. One unit is used as a gate across a double french door opening. I put blue painters tape on the floor rail below the gate to keep people from tripping on it particularly when it is just left open. The door latch is very easy on the hands. There is a ball on both sides of the latch that must be lifted at the same time in order to lift the latch and open the gate. My shepherd/boxer could easily push and destroy this unit with its plastic parts but fortunately respects the boundary when the gate is closed. To increase the number of panels used it is simply a matter of unscrewing the plastic cap, remove the metal rod and lower plastic cup, align plastic corners with the additional panel, drop the rod down the hole, position the corner to the desired angle, and screw the cap back on making sure to properly seat the teeth together as you screw it tight. Easy.To fold up just loosen all the top plastic joint caps. Separate the play yard at one of the joints. The open end that has the metal rod, will need the lower plastic cup piece to keep the rod in place until the ends are put back together. Fold in a zigzag manner. We bought this product to keep our puppy in an enclosed area. Within the second/third time of use, the brackets that bend the gate together started to get stuck, stiffen, freeze up and make large ‘cracking’ noises as if it was about to break. We couldn’t fold it in when we were done using it for the day and eventually the brackets along with a side of the door cracked and broke. This is a super cheap, low quality product that is DEFINITELY not worth the money you pay for it. It was a big disappointment. This playpen was a life saver when our pup was younger! The vertical bars are sturdy and because there are no horizontal bars, he couldn’t climb out. We used it for a few months to keep pup contained while he was awake and playing but we couldn’t keep a watchful eye on him. As he grew, we ordered a few extra pieces direct from Carlson to make the pen larger. Now that he’s a bit older and potty trained, he has more access to the house but we still use this - now as gates to block off areas instead of a contained pen. Excellent investment, super sturdy and gave me piece of mind that my pup was safe.Very unstable and no good as a barrier. If an 8 week pup can reach to the top of the fence and put his weight in, it’s flexible enough to lean down and he can easily walk over it.Don’t buy unless your dog is a small breed. We got this for our senior dog as she was having accidents in the house at night. It was easy to assemble, when stored takes up very little space...could also be used for small children or maybe a rabbit.
