it's free standing, its' adjustable. it creates a nice little barrier between the pets and the front door without having to be attached to walls - exactly what I was hoping for. It takes a little getting used to because it's locked by gravity (lift the middle portion to allow the sides to move), but once you get the hang of it, it works really well. It's easy to move, and tall enough my 90 lb dog doesn't challenge it. IT looks really nice, too. :D
